During the Memorial Day program Monday, May 29, at the New Prague Veterans Memorial, main speaker Col. Joe Sharkey talked about how Minnesotans have volunteered for the armed forces over the decades. At area cemeteries, family members took time to remember and honor those who served.
At Lanesburgh cemetery Monday morning, brothers Roger and Russ Meyer, both of New Prague, remembered their dad, Ivan G. Meyer, who is buried at the cemetery, southwest of New Prague. “My dad was a Korean veteran,” said Roger Meyer.

On a mild, late-spring evening, 300 seniors in New Prague High School's Class of 2023 graduated Friday evening and joined the ranks of the school's alumni.

Rice County officials are continuing to respond to a fire at the county’s landfill solid waste facility at East 145th Street in rural Dundas. The fire began in the landfill portion of the solid waste facility shortly after it closed for the evening on Monday, May 22.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but with assistance from state and local agencies, work is ongoing to mitigate any and all issues within the county’s control.

Members of New Prague High School's Class of 2023 enjoyed the annual senior send-off this afternoon at Next Chapter Winery south of New Prague.
The event included plenty of good food, games and the opportunity for the graduates-to-be to win prizes. It was capped off with a hypnotist show.
The Class of 2023 will graduate Friday, May 26, 7 p.m., from Trojan Stadium.

Memorial Day begins with the New Prague Veterans Honor Guard visiting area cemeteries to honor area veterans buried there. At each cemetery, the honor guard will read the names of veterans buried at the cemeteries followed by a 21- gun salute and the playing of Taps.
The schedule for cemetery visits are:
9 a.m. at St. Patrick
9:25 a.m. St. Benedict (change from last year)
9:55 a.m. Lanesburgh
10:15 a.m. Union Hill
10:30 a.m. Czech National
10:45 a.m. St. Wenceslaus

The 5K race for Run New Prague led off the 38th annual event as runners left the starting line around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in Memorial Park.
While overcast, temperatures were at 56 degrees Fahrenheit and the rain held off through Run New Prague.
Other events held during the morning event were the Kids Color Run and inaugural Push, Pedal, Pull race, which was made up mostly of members of the New Prague mountain bike team.

The Montgomery Area Community Club will host Czech May Day on Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. in Heritage Park in Montgomery, with a rainout date of May 13.
The fifth annual event welcomes in spring and features the raising of the Czech May Pole, a 20-30 foot pine tree with all the branches removed except for the very top, leaving a “Christmas Tree,” with ribbons and flowers. Ribbon dances will happen around the May Pole after it is raised.

UPDATE: Highway 19 from Henderson to Highway 169 has now been opened again as of 11 a.m. on April 28. The highway had been closed due to flooding since April 21.

In coordination with Carver County, Scott County is closing Scott County Road 9/Carver County Road 11 Friday, April 21, 1 p.m., because of Minnesota River flooding.
The Minnesota River at Jordan:
A bridge closure occurs when the water level reaches 26.7 feet; the forecast for tonight , April 19, is for reaching minor flood stage. It is expected that the river level will hit 26.7 feet at or around 1 a.m. Monday, April 24, and possibly reach 27.6 feet by next Wednesday, April 26.
The Minnesota River at Shakopee:

Yesterday, Thursday, March 13, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed Highway 93 from Henderson to Highway 169 due to flooding.
Traffic is detoured to Highway 19 until the water recedes.
The roadway will reopen when water has receded, and crews are able to make any necessary repairs.
When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply.

The Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office reports a team of searchers looking for signs of Shawn Michael Mooring found a body presumed to be Mooring this morning, Friday, April, 14, in the cattails and trees along the southeastern shoreline of the Silver Lake in Cleveland Township.
 

She works professionally investigating fraud cases and was a victim of it herself. While Cassie Kieffer hopes she and her husband might one day see some of the money they invested in the construction of a pool they never received returned to them, she hopes changes in state law will protect others from similar heartache.

Mark Novak was at New Prague’s Annual Firemen’s Dance & Drill Saturday, April 1, at the Park Ballroom. He was among the 16 members of the fire department’s drill squad and it was his 20th year participating.
The dance and drill are long time traditions, as this was the 135th year of the dance and the 115th year of the drill.
