New Prague’s archery team won its first meet of the season, finishing just shy of last year’s high-point total.

The New Prague Archery Club competed at the Concordia Academy Beacon Shootout in Roseville Saturday, Jan. 10, against teams from Becker, White Bear Lake, Champlin Park, Delano, Faribault, Minnesota New Country School (Henderson), Hastings, Mahtomedi, Princeton, Sartell, Sauk Centre, St. Croix Prep (Stillwater) and Zimmerman.

For 17 years Jen and Jason Schmit have ben helping providing warmth for others by collecting blankets and coats.

“We wanted to do something to help others,” said Jen, adding they also wanted to teach their four sons about aiding others.

Jen came up with the idea from a similar event she participated in at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. “We collected blankets and then distributed them,” said Jen. “It was a humbling experience as I saw people in need and it stuck with me.”

A week after a tough showing against some of the best high school dance teams around, the New Prague High School dance team showed it has impressive talent with a strong showing at its own invitational Saturday, Jan. 17.

The NP varsity kick team won its event and the jazz team finished third in a seven-team field.

The New Prague JV kick and jazz teams both finished second while the newly-formed B-squad kick team took fifth and the jazz team took third.

“They performed super well,” said NP coach Tiffany Sandhurst. “They were lockedin and ready to compete.”

The city of Elko New Market recently announced in a press release it has been awarded a $7 million grant through the Minnesota Highway Freight Program, a statewide initiative designed to improve freight mobility and enhance transportation infrastructure.

If you pay attention your city council, school board or county board – and be honest, most don’t – you might think they easily go through their agendas with relative ease with the exception of the occasional sticky item elected representatives know we care about one way or another.

Motorists fro Elko and Lonsdale were hospitalized after a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon in Cedar Lake Township.

 

Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1:54 p.m., Scott County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a head-on collision at the intersection of Panama Avenue and 255th Street East in Cedar Lake Township.

 

With four games to go, two against its primary opponent for an automatic berth in the state tournament, the New Prague floor hockey team is preparing for a possible showdown game early next month.

At 6-0, the undefeated NP team faced Mankato yesterday, Jan. 21, at Franklin Elementary School. Mankato is likely New Prague’s top competition for an automatic state tournament berth. The top team in the southern division wins the automatic berth. The alternative route to state requires winning a berth via the playoffs.

With Metro West Conference wins over St. Louis Park and Bloomington Jefferson, New Prague’s boys’ ice hockey team took two of three games last week.

 

Long-term, the setback against Farmington is the one game with noteworthy implications. Farmington is one of the top teams in Section 1AA. The Trojans are 9-6-2 overall, 3-2-1 against teams in Section 1AA. NP coach Brad Drazan said the Tigers will be among the top seeds in the section for the playoffs, a neighborhood where NP wants to reside.

 

Bob Allen passed away on January 16, 2026, at the age of 89. Bob was a devoted spouse to Dorothy, and father to Tom, Jennifer and Joan. 

Bob taught at Montgomery-Lonsdale High School for 28 years.

A celebration of life will be held at noon on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at O’Halloran & Murphy of Woodbury. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – Noon.

Georgine "Jean" Rose Bradshaw, age 93, a resident of Praha Village in New Prague, formerly of Le Center, passed away on January 7, 2026, at Episcopal Church Home in St. Paul assisted by Our Lady of Peace Hospice.

Jean was born on February 12, 1932, in Erin Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to John and Emma (Trnka) Sticha. She grew up in New Prague and graduated from New Prague High School with the Class of 1950. After high school, Jean moved to Minneapolis where she worked in various retail stores.

The Elko New Market City Council discussed a draft policy for remote meeting attendance at its Thursday, Jan. 8, meeting.

City Administrator Tom Terry said that evening’s draft was for a final consideration with it to be considered for approval at its Thursday, Jan. 22, meeting.

We can all appreciate an elected local government body working to make sure money is spent effectively by serving the greatest number of people efficiently.

The devil, however, is sometimes in the details.

Having dropped five games in a row, New Prague’s girls’ basketball team needs a win.

Having opened the Metro West slate with setbacks against powerhouse teams from Chanhassen and Waconia, the Trojans, 6-7 overall, will face three more tough opponents this week. They played Chaska Tuesday, Jan 13, and Thursday,, Jan. 15, 7 p.m., NP traveled to Orono. New Prague welcomes Benilde-St. Margaret’s to New Prague next Thursday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 10, was an evening filled with song at Giesenbrau Bier Co. as Generations Theatre Company celebrated its 25th anniversary with a cabaret. Cast members from past shows performed a musical revue of songs from past musicals, plus there was a spotlight on the company’s upcoming summer production.

It’s been a while, too long if you ask members of the New Prague boys’ ice hockey team, when they last won back-toback games. The effort is there but the results on the scoreboard haven’t been coming as easy as it did early in the season.

NP has dropped three of its last four games. The Tuesday, Jan. 6, setback at Dodge County, is one of those setbacks where the coaches and team would rather put the game in the rearview mirror and forget about it.

When she and her sister played ‘school’ while they were youngsters growing up in Iowa, Elaine Harty recalls frequently playing the role of the teacher. It’s a job she loved, even long after she retired from leading a classroom at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in New Prague.
