The WEM volleyball team defeated NRHEG Thursday, Nov. 4 at New Prague High School to win their 6th straight Sub-Section Championship. The Lady Bucs defeated the Panthers 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, and 27-25 to win the South Sub-Section title. The win advances WEM into the Section 2AA Championship Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at St. Peter High School. This is a time change due to their opponent, Southwest Christian of Chaska, having a State Soccer match. Southwest Christian, the No. 1 rated team in Class AA, swept Belle Plaine in the North Sub-Section Champion game.
The opening two matches in the Section 2AA Volleyball Tournament were easily won by the No. 1 seeded WEM Lady Bucs.
WEM defeated No. 8 seed Blue Earth Area 25-10, 25-9, and 25-11 in the first round Thursday, Oct. 21. Monday, Nov. 1 Minnesota Valley Lutheran was the next team to end their season after the Bucs downed MVL 25-18, 25-21, and 25-14.
Marlene “Marti” Zimprich, 90, of Elysian, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at her home in Elysian.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Elysian. Visitation will be held on Thursday, one hour before services at the church. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Elysian. While not required, masks are encouraged at the visitation and service.
Carol Morris, age 82 of Waterville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato. She was born December 10, 1938 to Paul and Theresa (Roemhildt) Dehn of Elysian. She was a lifetime member of German Lake Lutheran Church, where she was united in marriage to Eugene Morris on March 19, 1956.

Ashley Robinson, age 32, of St. Clair, died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 10, 2021, at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Bruce Loren Smith, age 66 of Waterville went to his heavenly home on Monday, October 25, 2021 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Driving my kids to school one morning, and my fourth grader reports from the back seat:
“Mom! ‘Bob’ and I were talking, and he told me that his mom is going to drive him to and from the field trip next week because he gets sick when he rides a bus. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!” my little redhead spouted in utter disbelief.
A quick glance in my rearview mirror revealed her mouth hung wide and her eyes lit up in shock.
New changes are coming to how people make phone calls as mandatory 10-digit dialing starts on Sunday, Oct. 24. The Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) July 2020 Order required all telecommunications carriers, to make any network changes necessary to ensure that users can dial 988 to reach the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) by July 16, 2022.
Following the city council’s decision to move forward with a major street project and a waste water treatment plant upgrade, Morristown’s City Administrator Michael Mueller resigned.
Mueller submitted his resignation during the council’s Oct. 4 meeting. His resignation was accepted. His employment with the city will end Nov. 12.
Mueller was hired by the city as a part-time administrator in July 2020 and the position soon became full-time.
Thousands of dollars in damage has been caused in the WEM School and the Lake Francis City Park in Elysian over the past few weeks.
The last week of September the WEM School had nearly $2,000 in damage and last week the Elysian City Park received a similar amount of damage.
The destruction at the park included mirrors, toilets, and paper towel dispensers being broken and/or completely demolished.
Jordyn Meskan, 25, of Minneapolis entered Heaven on October 14, 2021 after a courageous battle with Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer, normally found in children.
Jordyn was born November 18, 1995. She grew up in Minneapolis and attended grade school and middle school at Saint Mark’s Catholic School. Jordyn graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall (CDH) High School and went on to attend North Dakota State University (NDSU) where she earned her degree in civil engineering. She was a civil engineer at Black & Veatch, a company she dearly enjoyed being a part of.
LCHS Goals: Elysian Museum, technology updates, artifact inventory
Le Sueur County Historical Society (LCHS) has been busy.
The society, which aims to collect, preserve, and tell the story of Le Sueur County, will be holding its October meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19 in New Prague at the New Prague Public Library. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. CDC guidelines are followed.
A 3rd place finish by the WEM/JWP boys cross country team was a very solid finish for a team competing against much bigger schools in the Waseca Invitational held Thursday, Oct. 7 at Lakeside Country Club.
The Grizzlies were the smallest school enrollment- wise among the eight teams entered.
Ashley Robinson, a 2007 graduate of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School, died of COVID-19 on Sunday, October 10 at United Hospital in St. Paul. She was 32. She leaves behind three daughters, 12-year-old Annie, 10-year-old Bella, and 8-year-old Lexi.
Robinson’s long-time friend, Katie (Hering) Trier, has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise donations for the Robinson family.
The Funeral Service for Vernon John Alt, long time Elysian area resident, will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021, 10:30 AM, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Elysian, MN.
Vernon passed away at the age of 95 on December 8, 2020 in Owatonna, MN. He is survived by his daughters –Marlene Alt, Minneapolis; Leanne Alt and husband Gary Johnson, Owatonna; and Amy Alt Emm and husband Derek Emm, Cape Town, South Africa.
