Celebrating 50th anniversary of football championship

On Friday, Sept. 1, there will be two events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of New Prague High School’s 1973- ’74 football team and its winning the Minnesota State High School League Class B state championship.
Scott Proshek, who was a junior in high school at the time and one of the 43 members of the team and coaching staff, said there will be an open house Friday, 4:30 p.m., at the New Prague Golf Club. Proshek said the event is open to anyone. About 24 alumni of the 36 members of the team will be present. The open house will include a showing of the film where New Prague defeated Appleton for the state title. Later that evening at halftime of the NPHS Trojans’ home game, members of the 1973-’74 team will be recognized as well as coaches, managers and cheerleaders. Also recognized will be the chain gang that measured yardage at games, announcers, game statisticians and the bus driver.
Proshek noted New Prague Area Schools earlier this year removed some middle school athletic programs due to budget cuts. He said the group of players are taking the event as an opportunity to help raise funds for NPAS athletics. Proshek hopes their team’s fundraising efforts inspires championship teams from other NPAS sports to help.
