About every four weeks, my sixth grader, Anna, has to report to her class on a current event. She needs to report on one local, one state, one national, and one world headline throughout the school year. The students present their findings on a rotating basis, so the classroom gets a few “top news stories” each week. After the presentations, students can ask the presenter a few questions and discuss the topic. It’s a pretty cool project.

The boys and girls soccer teams - at varsity and junior varsity levels - were shut out in last week’s games against Mankato Loyola.
On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the boys were on the road, and the girls hosted the Crusaders. The JV boys lost 4-0, and the boys varsity lost 12-0. In Montgomery, the JV girls lost 6-0, and the varsity girls were shutout by the score 8-0.
Coach Carey Langer said his teams are banged up and playing more experienced teams.

TCU schools informed parents and guardians on Monday of three lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in members of the TCU School communities.
According to Superintendent Lonnie Seifert, the three confirmed cases were reported over the past five days.

The visiting Titans delivered a resounding win when they beat the Le Sueur-Henderson Giants 36-12 in their season-opener on Friday, Oct. 9.
TCU didn’t waste any time putting themselves on the board. They won the toss, but deferred and gave the Giants first action. The team executed three plays but failed to get a first down, forcing them to punt.
The Titans’ first possession started with a return to the Giants’ 30-yard line. Just five to six plays later, Matthew Rabenberg put his team on the board with a five-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Payton Hennen.

Members of the Czech Heritage Club spread the word about its organization and heritage over the weekend.
Three board members, Violet Chromy, George Mikiska, and Jim Simon, attended the festival in Faribault.

The repairs for a failed culvert on Highway 99 east of Highway 13, south of Montgomery, are expected to be complete by Friday, Oct. 16 with the detour removed by the end of the day, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
Highway 99 east of Highway 13 closed on June 30 due to a failed culvert after heavy rains. MnDOT engineers came up with a new design that will provide a long-term fix to the deep foundation issues and replaced the culvert.

Gilbert Arnold Kline, age 92, of Montgomery, died on Friday, October 9, 2020 at Central Health Care in Le Center. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery.
Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery at 11 a.m. with Father Tom Niehaus officiating. Interment will be in Bohemian National Cemetery in Montgomery. Military Honors will be provided by the Montgomery area Color Guard.

Sporting events are high risk for COVID-19 transmission, and are further high risk for activities that promote airborne particles of COVID-19. The following applies to all indoor sports, concerts, plays, competitions, performances and any other similar events that have spectators. This guidance is specific to the events that will take place in a school building or facility where instruction takes place and include the following parameters:

In an announcement Tuesday on the Montgomery Torchlight Parade and Firework's social media page, organizers stated the Holidazzle-like event will be canceled in 2020. They said it is due to "the pandemic restrictions by our state government."
"We would like to thank everyone for your support of this event. Unfortunately after careful consideration due to the pandemic restrictions by our state government we have no choice but to cancel the parade and fireworks for 2020" the post stated.

Helen Ann (Zelenka) Borg, of Montgomery passed away on October 1, at the age of 77, the victim of COVID-19.
Helen was born November 4, 1942, the daughter of Jim and Emma Zelenka.
She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1960 and graduated from nurses training through Swedish Hospital in 1962. Her nursing career included work at Abbott Hospital, Fairview Hospital, a hospital in San Diego, and more than 12 years at Group Health in Bloomington.

The “Fall Colors Cruise” rolls out of Henderson the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 3. Approximately 200 classic vehicles were participating in the 70 mile cruise that traveled through St. Thomas, Le Center, around Le Sueur County lakes to the Ottawa Road into Le Sueur and back to Henderson. The Henderson Classic Car Roll-In Committee hosted the cruise. Donations were also taken for the local food shelf that collected an estimated couple hundred pounds of food. The remainder of the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) activities calendar came into view Thursday, Oct. 1 during the Board of Directors meeting.
  After a presentation by the League’s Return to Participation Task Force, the Board of Directors approved a maximized winter activities season that trims 30 percent of the contest dates. By keeping the length of seasons generally intact, member schools will have the flexibility for rescheduling if contests are postponed because of COVID-19 related outbreaks or other interruptions.

Montgomery Ambulance service is 50 years old.
October 1, 2020, marks a half century of the city-owned service providing care to the local area.
Prior to the creation of the ambulance service, the Schoenbauer Funeral Home provided transportation and care to individuals during emergency situations. However, the state decided this was a conflict of interest.
At the same time, state and federal governments started a program to get ambulances into rural areas. Funding from this program helped created the Montgomery Ambulance service.
